Remove custom issue type from Jira v7.2.3

tifonas-katrina March 26, 2018

Hi,

I have a self-hosted  Jira server and was asked to remove HotFix(a custom issue type).

Problem is that HF was and still is widely used within company. There are more than 6K issue of that type.

Has anyone ever deleted a custom issue type from his/her instance?

Were issues (after deletion of issue type) visible to end users? What are the consequencies beyond end users' complains?

Regards,

K.

Yep, lots.  Especially when cleaning poorly curated Jira systems.

You will need to select an issue type to move all the existing hot-fixes to.  This may vary by team, so you might have to do it a project at a time.

If everyone is happy with the same target issue type, admin -> issue types -> delete will walk you through it quickly.

If different projects need different things, then use bulk edit to change the type (if they want many different ones like "HFs with component X should be bugs, HFs without X are all features"), or delete it from the issue type scheme, which will prompt Jira to ask for a target type for all the HFs in that project.

Hi,

you need to move all existing issues to another issue type before going ahead with issue type deletion. In order to do that you can move issue using bulk operation.

Please, verify that all fields are present on your target issue type in order to not lose information during this operation.

Using this approach you ca go ahead with your task and keep existing issues.

Hope this helps,

Fabio
