Our JIRA instance is tied to Active Directory for our user base. I had an issue were a project was being required to change the Reporter on issues when they edited them, if the Reporter had been removed from AD. I removed the Reporter field from the Edit screen. Now issues can be edited without the user having to change the reporter to someone active in AD. The downside of this is that now the Reporter field cannot be changed from the Open Issues screen. Is there a way to have the field editable from the View screen while keeping it off the Edit screen? We would like to have our cake and eat it too, if possible.
Hi Danna,
what you experience is the usual behavior and perfectly fine if you're used to Jira.
But a question, when you delete the user in the AD shouldn't it still stick around in Jira as inactive? Which then would mean inactive users don't do any harm and don't necessarily have to be changed as reporter etc. but can't be deleted as well.
But in general a few suggestions:
Why don't you use bulk editing to prevent the problem? Would be my first thought as a second step after removing people instead of flagging them inactive in the AD. Which then would mean, you could put it back on the Edit screen.
Second suggestions (not my preferred way) introduce a transition with the reporter field on a screen. That'd also work.
Best, Max
When a user is removed from AD, they do still show in JIRA as inactive, which is great. The problem lies in the fact the Reporter field is a Required field and apparently does NOT like it if the Reporter is inactive, so if the field is on the Edit screen, JIRA makes the user change the field to an active user before allowing them to save changes. Hence my removal of the field from the project's Edit screen.
I did point out to the PM they could still edit the Reporter field using the Bulk Edit feature, if they needed to. I mean really, how often does the Reporter field really need to be changed after the initial creation of an issue?
The question was just to see if anyone knew of a way to still have it editable on the main issues screen even though it wasn't on the Edit screen. I didn't actually think it was an option, but it never hurts to ask.

Which version are you on? Because I tested it yesterday with an inactive user and had no problems having an inactive user as the reporter. That's why I'm wondering here.
