Return to previous Status using global transitions

Hello all,

With Jira (5.0), is it possible to implement global transitions in a way that allows returning to the previous status ?

Usecases behind this:

We need a status "suspended" and "request for clarification" available from all other status. When an issue is un-suspended or clarified it should resume the workflow from its original status.

So, is this possible without hopelessly cluttering the Workflow, XML editing, etc?

Or maybe...is there an elegant workaround for these usecases (not using transitions per se)?
