Upgrading Jira with MSSQL Database from Jira 7.6 to Jira 8 is straight forward.

You can follow guides provided by Atlassian - https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver/upgrading-jira-server-installer-938846937.html

Also take a look at this guide - https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver/preparing-for-the-upgrade-966063325.html

On Scripts and Configuration,

  • Mostly there is no change, except for Look and Feel
  • If you are using some plugins make sure they have updated versions for Jira 8
  • If you are using any custom scripts with something like ScriptRunner, you might need to upgrade some parts (as some internal Java API has been updated)

On Confluence,

  • No there will be no impact,
  • At most you might need to recreate Application Link to confluence.

On side note - Jira 7.6 is limited supported version so you must upgrade as soon as possible.

Thank you DPK for your answer, one more clarification i would like to ask:

1. we have 3 application : jira service desk, jira core, jira Software.

do i have to start by any specific order?

2. on level of add-on :

option1: i need to disable all the add-on before proceeding with upgrading above applications

option2: i need to upgrade all add-on then proceed with upgrade

thank you

Application order is independent. You can start/install/upgrade them as you like. I install Jira Software and then add Jira Service Desk to it.

On Add-ons, there are three possibilities,

  • Some add-ons have one compatible version from Jira 7.6 to Latest version of Jira 8, upgrade these add-ons before you upgrade Jira.
  • Some add-ons have different compatible version for Jira 8 and above, there is not point in upgrading them before Jira upgrade
  • Addons that have no compatible version for Jira 8, for them please ask developers.

I started with service desk, software and then core upgrades.

then after the upgrades is done the add-on's were disable so uploaded latest versions. And finally run re-indexation.

thank you.
