What activity triggers a JIRA issue to be 'watched'?

There is an autowatch toggle in user preferences. (See the screenshot below)

Where it's toggled to 'enabled' what activity on an issue causes you to become a watcher of it?

Brendan,

This is generally interacting with the issue. Creating, Commenting, uploading a document, logging work, etc. This by default will add you to the "watchers" role.
