Why are my Bugzilla Enhancements not being imported as Stories/Improvements?

Daniel McRae December 11, 2018

"Import data from Bugzilla" says:

Every Bugzilla bug becomes a JIRA issue of type 'Bug', with one exception: a Bugzilla issue with severity 'Enhancement' becomes a JIRA issue of type 'Improvement' and priority 'Major'.

However, when I import my project from Bugzilla, all of my Enhancements are imported as Bugs. Why is that? Am I doing something wrong?

Do you have "Improvement" issue type in the project's issue type scheme?

Daniel McRae December 11, 2018

No, I didn't. Odd that it would be part of the Default Issue type Scheme, but not part of the my project's issue type scheme by default (I didn't remove it)...especially when the documentation specifically mentions that Enhancements will be imported as Improvements. Why not include it by default?

Is "Improvement" a standard JIRA issue type or a custom type? I see it included in the Default Issue Type Scheme (making me think it is standard), but when I went to add it to my project, I had to type the full name in as if it were a custom type - it wasn't listed for me to select. What would happen if I misspelled it?

BTW-What is the difference between an Improvement and a Story? Why not just import Bugzilla Enhancements as Stories? Can I configure Jira to import Enhancements as Stories instead of Improvements?

I will run the import again on a new project with the "Improvement" issue type included and see what happens. Thank you.

BTW - My project is a Kanban software development project.

Both!  It's created by a couple of the project templates.  But not Kanban, which is why you were missing it in there.

You do need to get the spelling right for it when adding it, the Bugzilla importer does match on the full spelling.  I don't think the importer can be told to use stories, but if you let it create improvements, you can bulk-edit them later.

There's not a lot of difference between a story and improvement, some of us would argue that they're pretty much the same thing (and quite happily use them interchangeably, or just stick to one of them).  You don't have to use them in different ways, but it might be useful to you.  Might be useful to have them separate for reporting too.

Thank you.

So I did a new import into a new (Kanban) project that includes the Improvement issue type and my Enhancements were still imported as Bugs and not Improvements.

What should I try next?

Hmm.  I honestly don't know.  It's starting to sound like the documentation is wrong.  What version of Jira are you using and which doc did you get the quote from?  (I recognise it, so my doubt is now old doc vs newer Jira or old doc vs cloud Jira)

We are running a hosted installation of JIRA 7.9.0 installed on May 8 2018.

JIRA Software 7.9.0

JIRA Core 7.9.0

JIRA Agile v7.9.0-DAILY20180326142825

The documentation is found here:

Ok, the docs for 7.9 are pretty much the same and make the same claim about improvements.  I think this needs to go to Atlassian support!

Daniel McRae December 20, 2018

I updated our installation to 7.13.0 and verified that Bugzilla Enhancements are still not being imported properly.

So I filed a bug and received an email about it (see below), but I cannot find my bug in Atlassian's system. The "View request" link works, but the bug itself doesn't seem to be listed among all of the other JIRA bugs (https://jira.atlassian.com/secure/BrowseProjects.jspa?selectedCategory=all&selectedProjectType=all). Why not? Did I do something wrong?

Ok, that's a Service Request, not necessarily a bug - Atlassian will triage it and decide what it is.  If it is a bug in their opinion, it may end up in the development area, but it might not be public.  If it's not a bug, they'll let you know what to do about it via the request.
