Hi team,
Can someone please explain me the internal working of calculated fields. Will they still be action (in background) if they are created but not added in any project.
Let say I created a calculated field C, where C= A+B. A, B are number fields in project P. Now I added C to the project but due to some performance issues I removed C from project. Will this C be still be in action (since A and B are still in project and given values)
I've done a few tests and the calculated field will still be calculated as long as there are values in the Math/Numeric expression fields.
In this example, the CalculatedNumberFieldC has been added to Montreal but not Quebec which has only NumberFieldA and NumberFieldB. Also, for Ottawa, there is only the NumberFieldA.
If you remove the value, for example, from NumberFieldB in Montreal, CalculatedNumberFieldC is cleared out.
I've seen similar behaviour for other calculated fields from different addons/vendors.
Hope it helps.
IL.
I believe that the calculation only occurs when the value of the field is requested. If the field doesn't appear on any screen, then there is no cost to having the calculated field in the system. When you request the value, for instance in the Issue Navigator, the calculation is done in real time as the data is presented. The only time that this should create a significant performance issue is if you export the data, since the export function will request the value of the field for every row that is being exported.
