convert date to string?

Hi,

I am using a date picker field to select a date, however when i pull the field into the subject line of an email using Email This Issue plugin, it shows yyyymmdd 0000000 so its including the time. i have tried formatting in the body and it works, its just the subject line which has the issue.. As a work around i want to have a text field which i can pull that date through, but convert it to a string with the format DD/MMM/YY so i can include the text field in the subject line instead of the date field.

Also why does the date field use the format including time when it is date picker and not date time?
