how to automate populating a Custom Field's numerical value with +1 of a previous value

Does anyone know how to automatically populate a new issue's Custom Field with an increment of a number?

As an example:

If we have a Jira Project called XYZ and its Jira Issues have a Custom Field called "Foo ID"

and the maximum value for XYZ's 'Foo ID' is currently 1234, then when a new XYZ issue is created it'll automatically set Foo ID to 1235 (and the next one to 1236, and so on)

Does anyone know how to do this, please?
