upgrade jira and jira core

I just upgraded JIRA Software from the admin UI to version 7.1.9. It now says I need to upgrade JIRA core to same version. I understood that JIRA software included core? I tried running the upgrade script for core (on linux) but it won't let me use the same ports as the current installation. Is there any way to simply upgrade and not change ports?

Hey Gordie,

JIRA core needs to be stopped while you do the upgrade, so that it can replace the existing application with the latest version. It sounds like you're getting errors on the port use because the existing version is still running.
