what is the hierarchy of issues in JIRA?

My understanding of hierarchy should be

Epics - Story - Task - Subtask

how to link task to story, i was able to link story to Epic, subtask to story, but cannot able to link task to a story.

Can someone let me know how they are linking the task to a story. if you are following same hierarchy as me.

Nope. It's Epics -> Story -> Subtask.

Tasks are the same level as stories.

If so can you please give some examples for the usage of task and story. What is the difference between a task and story?
