We use themes to group epics; themes are application functionalities that span releases (and usually last the lifetime of the application).
Ideally, we'd like to have a Theme issue type that can be used with Epics in a Story Map just like Epics are used with Stories. Is that possible?
If not, how do we show stories by Label? We can use Label to provide a theme... not ideal, but works well.
From what I've seen, JIRA doesn't have themes cleanly baked into it. Labels is one way to find your theme along with having a quick filter that finds those labels at the top of your board. It requires some training, and you'll have to ensure that folks don't misspell those labels.
Another solution might be this add on, but it's not free.

only epics have the custom field 'epic link' which is used to map stories by epics. A mapping by label is not possible right now. but you can map stories by 'component'!
