help determining system requirements

I'm trying to make sense of the recommended system requirements to set up a server for evaluation. Can anyone recommend a linux distro that's known to work well, or will literally any work? Our business standard is Oracle RH5 which is gravely old and I'm concerned may not have access to dependencies that it will need. Thanks anyone willing to share your experience with this!

Well, it's really anything that can run the version of Java you need to support the applications.

Ideally, that's Oracle Java 1.7 and 1.8 for most Atlassian apps (mostly 1.7 now, with the expectation of going to 1.8 soon).

Most places I know go with the expected corporate workhorse - RedHat 6.latest for production and the same again, or CentOS for dev/test, but there's a good swathe of people using it on Ubuntu as well. It's less common, but not unheard of to see it on SuSE, the Mandrake family, Arch, Gentoo and all sorts of other stuff.

Personally, I'd recommend whatever distribution that is best supported within your organisation. But a more recent version if possible.

Nic is spot on, especially when it comes to supported platforms in your organisation. One thing to keep in mind specific to Stash is what version of Git is supported by your platform, which has been known to cause frustrations on RHEL 6:

That's the thread that essentially spawned this question. I am hoping that the latest version of Oracle RH6 (6.2?) won't be affected. However, if it's absolutely necessary we should be able to pull from another repository or manually upgrade the package, which I know some orgs would not allow.

I don't know if RH6.2 comes with a newer version of Git, but somehow I doubt it. If you're able to upgrade the Git version manually (which I know some orgs refuse to do) you should be fine.

The OS you use is not of much importance, as long as capable of running the applications as described on our Supported Platforms page. If you can comply to these recommendations, I would not expect any issues.
