Unable to connect to Github Enterprise with PAT

David Lucas August 26, 2025

In SourceTree I was unable to connect to Github Enterprise using my PAT and following the documentation.

It just shows Authentication failed.

Hi @David Lucas ,

Probably would need more details about this:

  1. Which version of Sourcetree are you running?
  2. Are we talking about Windows or Mac?
  3. Which docs/steps have you followed? Was it this?

Version 4.2.2 and above should (by release notes) support PATs for Github accounts 👀

Cheers,
Tobi

SourceTree: 3.4.13

Windows 11

We followed the official instructions to create a Personal Access Token (PAT) and use that.

I see yours show OAUTH. We will try that. Thanks

Cool! Feel free to write it down here if OAuth works (or if upgrading the product to 4.2.2 works with PAT), to potentially help others if anyone stumbles upon the same/similar thing.

I have this same issue. IDK where you get that 4.2.2 version info from but when I go in SourceTree on Update is says it IS the most recent with 3.4.25 from my Windows 11 machine

Also trying to use GitHub Enterprise with SSO, generated a PAT there and wasted a couple hours trying to look for answers why the Tools/Options Authentication will not let me add an Account; fails when I try to refresh the password so OK does not save.
Using the browser I can navigate to the site (obviously as I generated a PAT there but just being patently obvious here)

I tried both Basic and Personal Access token options and used the token as the password but it keeps telling me "Authentication failed
Failed to check login for user [myuser]
user/emails was not found.

Hosting Service: GitHub Enterprise
Host URL: Accurate URL used works in browser
Preferred Protocol: HTTPS

Credentials:
Authentication: Basic (also tried Personal Access Token
Username: pulled from the GitHub Enterprise name there, also tried my email, neither work
Refresh Password: using SSO and PAT to put the PAT token in but also tried my domain password

Yeah, my bad @mschultheiss on that version.

Version 4.x is for Mac, and 3.x is the current/latest one for Windows.

I haven't played that much with this, and there's not that detailed documentation when it comes to Sourcetree. The only thing I've managed to dig out is this, but I'm guessing you've all followed the mentioned steps: Add an API token to Sourcetree or another application
