Come on, guys... get with the times!   3 years of upvotes for a Linux port of SourceTree, and it still isn't here!

It's sad that a cool company like Atlassian is so disrespectful to Linux community sad

And of their legit customers too... same answer when asking for a Bitbucket hosting in Europe or for being able to keep a trace of the edition of the comments in Jira (333 votes so far, https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRASERVER-12400). These are two requirements linked to european laws in my case, but Atlassian just don't care about their customers. The company I work for has already paid a few hundred of thousands euros in Atlassian products: we have multiple instances of Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket server, Fisheye/Crucible and Hipchat used by a few hundred developers. They simply don't listen to their customers.

I use Linux as my primary development environment. Most people I know use Linux as their primary development environment. You're missing a huge market by not supporting Linux. Frankly, it's just bad practice in this day and age not to support Linux- especially on a git product. Linux is the platform for developers. Many major projects are Linux exclusive, such as ROS.

Please, for goodness sake, please support this market.

I saw some comments here about Gitkraken.

I love it.  Paid $60 for the annual subscription to get just TWO features I can have free in SourceTree.  (See Atlassian...we WILL pay for it)

But, even though Gitkaken has a cool name, and some awesome graphics...it still doesn't offer the grouping and repository management and forking capabilities that SourceTree has.

And, even though there is a configuration screen for Gitflow, they seem to have forgotten about it. (seem to).

They just got profiles.  Awesome improvement.

Gitkraken is coming along fast.  I have sent a note to the Gitkraken guys telling them I can almost...almost ...drop SourceTree... just a little bit further...

Once done, Gitkraken will make SourceTree irrelevant.

For those of you still looking for a good GIT GUI for Linux, GitKraken is really good. I was hoping Atlassian would help us Linux guys, but I've now found GitKraken to actually be better than SourceTree.

Check it out. It's worth it.

I wouldn't have found a better option if Atlassian were looking out for us. wink

Hey everyone. I've given up on waiting for SourceTree for Linux. If you were using it for Git, you should really check out GitKraken. I don't work for the company or anything, but I started using it and there's really nothing I miss from SourceTree for how I use a git GUI. Check it out!

+1 another millionth vote for Linux that I'd expect available as part of the 3 core Linux based distributions & respective package managers:

  • (GNU) Debian (would also cover Ubuntu)
  • Redhat (also covers most other variants CentOS, etc).
  • Gentoo

The failure / flops of SourceTree thus far (IMO) are related to the organizational flow / approach of Atlassian (no surprise) itself. SourceTree is a grate tool and was most notable in its earlier inception. Capitalizing on an entire stack of `free` software - yet failing to leverage a similar philosophy or approach - its no surprise that more than 3+ years after release there is no Linux client. Added to this a clear license scheme would be better than a convoluted T&C thats part of Atlassians general products / services.

The continued demise and current state of SourceTree as all thats less than the defacto graphical-git client are most likely due to inadequacies from within the management hives of Atlassian itself.

For Linux users - consider: smartgit - it is free for non-commercial use.

This thread should win an award or something... not because it's been running since 2013, but because it's been ignored for that long without comment by @Atlassian

That's why I changed to SmartiGit:

  • Windows
  • Mac
  • Linux

Another thing that annoys me is the slowness of SourceTree compared to SmartGit. SmartGit is so much faster and have all the tools of SourceTree.

I've been using SmartGit for over a year now and don't like the way it can't handle .gitignore files in the root sensibly, hence looking at SourceTree. Otherwise SG is fine. Would happily pay for a ST licence. Maybe Attlasian don't understand (like Adobe don't) that there are thousands of Mac and PC users that are desperate to move to Linux but can't simply because a programme maker won't support the OS. Not asking for freebies, quite happy to pay, just give us what we need if you have the expertise to.

Ami Geva November 8, 2015

SmartGit is a great tool and works fine for me too. I subscribed to this thread almost two years ago and nothing happened so I would suggest all of us to just drop it.

Alternative: GitEye.

  1. Windows, check.
  2. LINUX, check.
  3. Mac OS X, check.
  4. Is actually "good", check.

Atlassian, you have competition. laugh

I've switched from git eye recently because it is based on eclipse and I don't like the .project file it lays down in each project.

Another cross-platform alternative I have really liked of late, though, is git cola. It's highly customizable and works on all platforms. I have written a github gist which shows the configuration I use for git cola, which makes it look a lot like the GitHub repo pages or ST. https://gist.github.com/djhaskin987/cda532e9ffbea1a5a025

boo....

of course, on the brighter side of the mourning you also don't have to wait for just your boss to come and tell you what to do - your mac will fill that role quite nicely as it subverts you to it's (steve's) vision of what you should be doing...and how you should be doing it

Bogdan Hlevca June 9, 2014

Well said! I think the -1 for linux was not really necessary. It was a sign of lack of maturity on the part of the poster. MacOS is a nice platform, however, it does not need support on a Linux thread. I think many took that post as a slap in their faces, but did not think that it deserves an answer.

I believe that the main reason for not creating a Linux version is the fat that Linux users are known of not wanting to pay for their tools. Sure some techincal difficulties may be a factor too, but if resources are scarce money talks.

While I appreciate your point about the -1, and agree on that. I think the argument about Linux users not willing to pay for a tool is rendered moot by the fact that Atlassian gives the tool away to the 2 platforms that would, by that same logic, be willing to pay.

I am a Mac user. I am also a Linux user. I would pay a reasonable fee. But mostly, I am for a Linux version as it ultimately shows respect for the creators of the root reason the tool exists.

+1 Linux. Sadly, I am no longer sure Atlassian is listening to this thread.

You may have a point by saying that Atlassian gives the tool away for the other 2 platforms. However, keep in mind that most corporate development takes place on the 2 mentioned platforms and Atlassian also sells accounts and space for code versioning. Free is not allways free, their GIT tool may be just a bait. Just a humble opinion.

I am a Mac user too, but I mostly code on Linux. I totally agree that any GIT tool should have a Linux version at least, as you mention, out of respect for the GIT creator and for the main purpose of its existence.

Was just about to say it's companies like these that keep some tied to MS and MAC. Like Adobe not porting their suite to Linux despite a clamour for it. Makes you wonder if they're getting a back-hander from the big boys not to piss on their parade, sod the plebs (users)! The point being that if Adobe, Atlassian, et al, did produce Linux versions, MANY people and some agencies would drop Windows and IOS in a heartbeat. You only have to read their forums.

Anyway, happy to say we can now vote with our feet (and wallets) and use GitKraken as Jim suggests. It now works well on Linux Mint smile Companies like Atlassian will go to the wall eventually. They're too short sighted to survive.

Bye
