Can board members see all cards on a board? Or only those they are assigned to?

Hello, I'm new to Trello and just trying to find out how this works before sending invites to all my team members.

If I set up a board with 20 cards and 10 members, can all the members see all the cards, or can they only see the cards that they are assigned to individually?

Just to be clear - I think the other answer answers a different question.

If you do not want some of your team members to be able to see the Board, make it Private and they won't see it if you never add them.

If you want members to only see the Cards they are tagged in on a Private Board, which is what it sounds like you are asking - no, you cannot do that. Once you've added me to a Private Board, I can see the whole board, not just the cards I am added to.

Ok, thank you, that puts a different perspective on it.  What happens if I add a member to a card, but not to a board?  Or can't I do that?

If not, then what's the point of having both board members and card members?

Board members are just the people added to the board.

Card members are for assigning / watching / etc. 

For example, for one of the work boards I'm in, we have maybe 20 people as members of the board, but the only people assigned to cards are either the person who "owns" the work to do, or the people who are responsible for approving it, etc. It's not a permissions-related thing at all.

It depends on the way you created the board

1. If you created a board by selecting the 'Private' option when you creating the board then that board will be available for the selected members by you.
2. If you created a board by selecting the 'Team' option when you creating the board then that board will be available for the selected team.
3. If you created a board by selecting the 'Public' option when you creating the board then that board will be available for the public.

So which option you tried with the mentioned board and members ?

Thankyou, that helps.  I have a private board.

I can now add different members to the different cards and they will be able to see those, but if I don't add any members to a card then they will remain hidden to other members - is that correct?

You are almost welcome and you are totally correct. If you need a board with combination of members on different boards, I suggest to create a separate team for that. So you can use that team for future boards if the same group of people will be needed the access. And the other boards will be kept private and the people on them will only see that.

Private option will allow you to add members specifically for each cards. Not for the complete board.
