Card Button Showing despite unchecking "Enable On this Board"

Souk Nomichith December 2, 2020

Code and information has been redacted for proprietary reasons.

The "Enable on this board" is contradictory. Despite me unchecking it. It still shows up on my cards. Further more I don't quite understand "Enabled on all boards on this team" and "Shared with team" Is there any in-depth explanation on how these work. Its frustrating that I am trying to control which people see these buttons because I have different levels of users in our company that don't require specific buttons.

@Garrett Could this request be submitted to the butler development?

Scenario:

15 Boards

20 buttons

all buttons enabled on 14 Boards

Only 2 of 20 buttons enabled on 1 board

I'll let the team know you'd like to see more granular permissions control like that.

For now, the way to accomplish that would be to create the same buttons on each board and enable/disable them individually. That's a lot more of a manual process though, I know, but that would the path to take now.

@Garrett Thank you for your reply. As a workaround I have been copying each board's button as you have mentioned. The only issue now is, if I intend to update a specific script the process would have to be repeated on every board. That is to update, I would have to manually replace each button on each board. Thank you for helping me understand. I hope the dev team accepts my proposal for granular permission controls for board buttons.

Hey Souk,

That is expected behavior, although I understand why that can be a bit confusing. To clarify, let's cover the behavior of each of those checkboxes first:

  1. Enabled on this board - Pretty self explanatory, it toggles whether or not the Butler button is enabled on the board.
  2. Enabled on all boards on this team - This toggles whether or not the button is enabled on every board in the associated Trello team. If for example you wanted to use this same button on another board, you'd want to check that box. Otherwise, to see the same button on another board, you'd need to re-create it there as well.
  3. Shared with team - This toggles whether or not your other Trello team members can see and use the button as well. If only you want to use it, then you would leave it unchecked.

The third box has no part to play in the behavior you're seeing here. What's causing this specifically is the second box, Enabled on all boards on this team. When you enable that, you are telling Butler you want this button enabled on every board in the team, so it does just that.

If you go to another board, you'll see that button, and if you open the Butler menu, you'll see it there too. However, if you uncheck Enabled on this board in that board, nothing will change, as you've found.

That's because the second box takes precedence over the first. You can't disable it individually because the other, enable all box explicitly enabled it on all boards. To fully disable that button on a board, you'd instead need to uncheck the second box.

Regarding sharing, I'm afraid there aren't super granular options for who can and cannot see them when Shared with team is enabled. Any members of your Trello team can see those buttons and use them, so you'd need to separate those permissions by removing team members and instead adding them to the board directly as guests.

Hopefully that helps explain, but let me know if any more questions come up!

Thanks for your reply. I still have questions.

Does Shared with team  enabled share with team on all boards?

Where is the primary or root location where card buttons are managed? I created a brand new board, enabled a card button on that board and now its only available on that board. I initially created the card button on a different board.

Hey Souk,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

The shared with team is relative to the board itself. So if you check that on Board A, for example, and then you have the same button on Board B, it would still need to be shared there as well.

Card and board buttons will originate from the board they are created on, vs something like rules which are tied to your account. That behavior about the new board's button does sound a bit strange though. If it's still causing trouble, can you send a screenshot of that over to us at https://trello.com/contact please?
