Can't find how to close board (to delete it)

Christine Baker December 19, 2019

I tried to follow the instructions at https://help.trello.com/article/801-deleting-a-board

However, I don't have this option to close the board.    I'd include a screenshot, but can't figure out how to copy it in here without saving and uploading :(

Please believe me, there's no link to close the board, instead, there a link for public viewing.

I'm new to Trello, just trying to see whether that will help with my Alzheimers, but maybe I'm too far gone.

Appreciate any pointers!

Hi, Christine! Hope I can help you here.

Are you the creator, owner, or administrator of this board? I do know the "Close board" option is only available to board administrators, so if you didn't create the board yourself and someone else invited you to the board, it's likely that person didn't make you an administrator of the board and you can't see the "Close board" menu option.

You can also tell if you're an admin on a board by the icon over your user icon near the top of the board. It looks like this:

That would be the first thing to check on - let me know if that helps!

Thanks, Alex, I checked and I didn't create the board, it's one of those samples with other people I don't know in the pics.

I haven't figured out templates yet.    I'm quite familiar with themes and templates for websites, save you hundreds of hours of work.

At Trello, I don't understand what the templates are for.  I can set up a new board with my workflow (a few lists) in literally less than 60 seconds.  The hardest part is THINKING about MY structure.   Am I missing something?

Anyway, it's not my board, sadly can't even remember why it's there, I just did a late night session and set up a bunch of boards and must have thought it would be a good example.

What do I do now?

If the board is one of the sample board templates or sample boards, it doesn't sound like it's actually saved to your Trello account. Trello shows a recent activity section for recently viewed boards - if that's what you're referring to, that board will just go away eventually if you don't open it again.

If you joined the board as a member, you can opt to leave the board in the same menu section where the "Close board" option is supposed to be. If you see neither option, you are not a member of that board - you are just viewing a public board.

As for the templates, are you talking about board templates or card templates? Both are completely optional to use, but some details on each.

  • Board templates are just examples created by other members of the Trello community (or by Atlassian/Trello themselves) that you can use as a starting place if you like it.
  • Card templates can be used on a board for cards that you might need to create repeatedly. You can basically create a template card with a default title, description, checklist, attachments, etc. if you find that useful. More info on these templates can be found here.

You're right Alex!     And that's my biggest problem, I didn't even see the "recently viewed."

My brain looks for the most important info at the top -- 61 years old and that will never change because everything I do is structured that way.

Is there a way to get rid of the recently viewed?

Or at least move it to the bottom?

Unfortunately, there's no way to remove or hide the "recently viewed" section as far as I know.

However, if you want the most important boards to appear at the top of your "all boards" page, you can star boards that you access frequently or most often, and that "Starred Boards" section should appear above the "recently viewed" section. There are a couple ways to star boards:

  • When viewing the "all boards" page, hover your cursor over the board name/image. In the bottom right of the board's image, a little white star should appear. Click the star to change it to yellow/gold, which means the board is starred.
  • When viewing a board, click the white star icon next to the board name near the top of the board.

In either case, click the star icon again to unstar the board, too.

Thanks so much again, Alex, starring did the trick!

I love looking at other boards, it's amazing to see what all can be done.   Don't know why it irritated me so much having the recently viewed on top, but happy now.

Hopefully I can get more organized now, when your memory goes this is really helpful!
