Jira Plans Program Board doesn't include Epics in the capacity planning.

Rob Peters September 12, 2025

Hi,

I am currently running into an issues when plan using a Program Board in Jira Plans for the upcoming period. The idea is that we are going to plan our work based on Epic which are in our case is a project phase (e.g. production, installation, commissioning, etc).

I have entered a estimation in the Epics, which is displayed in the overview in Jira Plans however at the mouse tip a message is show that "this work item isn't included in capacity calculation"

IIs there a solution to fix this?

The reason I want to plan on based on Epics is that I don't want to plan based on task/sub-task level.

Hi Rob,

Unfortunately as you've identified we don't support Epics or above in Program Boards - it was designed as a feature to work on short term planning of base level work (stories/tasks), and as a result Epics don't take up any actual capacity as the feature currently works.

We do have a public suggestion ticket to support levels above Epic appearing in the Program Board, and as part of that it would mean Epics and such would need to be included in the capacity calculations https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-94136. I'd encourage you to vote on this so that our product managers know what features users want.
