How will the new ci/cd runtime (microVM, runc) affect self hosted runners?

After reading the latest blog post on the new ci/cd runtime, I feel a little bit lost...

The new runtime is based on microVM/runc. The old runtime has already been discontinued as of September 2024.

However, there is no indication either in the blog article or in the documentation as to what impact this will have on self-hosted runners? (Especially the Docker Linux runner.) Is there any further information here?

This blog post concerns Pipelines builds that run on Atlassian's infrastructure. This change will not impact self-hosted runners.
