some repos return 404 when trying to clone with http; others do not

polycopter May 5, 2020

I was trying to hg clone all my repos, preparatory to converting them to git (or not, maybe). Most of them were fine with hg clone, although some required my username/pw & some didn't; but several returned a 404 error code. What could cause that? Is it possible some of my repos are git repos? I thought they were all hg since I prefer Mercurial over git. Can I find that out somewhere. I also thought they were all public, but perhaps not (maybe that's why the user/pw prompts?); how can I determine that?
