Am i missing something? where is the simple pen or brush option?

Hi Alistair. I don't think that this function is part of the Whiteboard feature set yet. If this is a crucial feature for you, you might evaluate a third party diagramming app instead. I am part of team draw.io, so we would appreciate if you give draw.io a try. Of course, you can also contact the Atlassian enigneers anytime and and raise a feature request so it will be included in future iterations.
