How can I create an user with abbreviation

When we started with Atlassian in 2017, it was possible to give new users an abbreviation. Is this no longer possible or how can I change it.

If I reply to a comment and want to tag someone I use the abbreviation of the user, so with new users is this difficult and I have to use firstname.lastname.

I'm not sure what you mean by an abbreviation. Do you mean you want to give users a username besides their email address or first/last name?

Usernames have been removed from Atlassian Cloud and so it is no longer possible to enter a username.
