How to Avoid Broken Links

Julie Tholen May 1, 2018

Dear Confluencites,

I have been advised that in order to avoid broken links, I should link to the Page ID of a page versus the Page Name / Title. Is this true?

If so, it seems to be fairly cumbersome, as so far as I can tell, I have to have two sessions open, go into page history, copy the Page Id and then and paste that into the URL. However, I find that I am then linking to the Page History and not Page View (I did find some code that will deal with this issue, but it looks like I would have to paste it in on each page, but not sure about that.)

So in short, I need to know if it is worth the effort OR is Confluence smart enough to retain links when pages are moved or reordered.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

If you insert the title from the insert link dialog and choose the title then the title will change automatically on the page - no need to use the pageId:Screen Shot 2018-05-01 at 11.16.18 AM.png

Here are the pages before and after the moves/reorders and title changes:
