Hello, I am not able to enable the Table of Contents macro. I've used it many times before in other Spaces, but in this new Space, it no longer shows up when I search for it. I even tried to copy it over from a working Space, and it just says 'Error loading the extension!"
In the screenshot, you can see both attempts. I also tried searching for it in the top search bar, as well as in the plugin marketplace with no luck in either case.
Is this extension somehow Space-dependent? Is there a way to enable it in the settings? I did not see anything that would enable/disable extensions or macro, or anything different than my other Spaces.
Edit:
(Also, I've looked through the other posts with this issue here in the forums, but none of them seem to be this exact issue. I know how the Table of Contents should work. I've used it many times before. It just doesn't seem to be working now. Not sure if I should report to support instead? Not sure how to do that)
Hi @Elijah Claude ,
Probably the best bet would be to reach out to Atlassian Support > use "Technical issues and bugs" option.
*note that only app admins (and other admins 'above') can raise tickets for their instances
However, it might be worth checking if you're experiencing the same issue on other browsers (or in an incognito window) + if other users are seeing this behavior as well.
There isn't a global setting to enable/disable this (at least not the one that I'm aware of) so ToC should definitelly be there. 👀
Cheers,
Tobi
Wow Tobi! You may have inadvertently solved the issue!
I brought up the page on my mobile app, at first it wasn't showing up on the app, but as I navigated a couple of other pages in the Space that was showing up, the page in question showed up with a working ToC. When I went back to my desktop, the ToC was working in both preview and published mode!
So perhaps this is some kind of strange cloud save issue.
I'll keep an eye on it in the coming days to ensure this is a fix. And I may still report the issue so they're aware of it.
Thanks so much for the insight!

Hi @Elijah Claude ,
The Table of Contents macro is still part of Confluence Cloud — it should normally appear in the macro list without needing to enable anything extra in the Space. The “Error loading the extension” message looks more like a temporary issue in the editor rather than something that can be switched on/off per Space. If it continues, I’d recommend opening a support ticket so Atlassian can check what’s happening in your site.
Out of curiosity, what kind of pages are you building where you rely on the Table of Contents? That might help others share alternative ideas in case you need a workaround while this gets fixed.

Thanks for the message Mia!
Something I just found out is that when I publish the page the 'error' still turns into a functional ToC! So it seems just the draft version is broken somehow.
(And again, I can only get a ToC by copying one over from another Space)
I'm a storyboard designer for virtual simulations where I often create 10-30k word 'scripts' for the projects my team is creating. ToCs really help to navigate through scripts more easily.
Creating multiple pages for each section can make it too unwieldy, since it's much easier to just read full through rather than having to click through or navigate a bunch of embedded pages. I used to try that approach before I discovered the ToC feature.
I also use the ToC to easily denote updates to the script in iterations.
Finally, ToCs are super helpful at visualizing the high-level architecture that will later be used in development.

Thanks so much for sharing that context, @Elijah Claude — it really helps to understand why the ToC is so important in your workflow. Writing scripts of that size sounds intense, and it makes total sense that having a clear ToC is key for navigation and updates.
Glad to hear it still works once published, even if the draft view is a bit buggy. Hopefully Atlassian smooths that out soon so you don’t have to rely on copy-pasting between Spaces.
