I'm trying to customize the PDF export and the docs say that "it is useful to look at the intermediary HTML source to which the CSS is applied. This intermediary HTML is created whenever you create an HTML export that contains multiple pages" but i've been unable to guess its URL from the download URL so i was wondering if it is even available and if so where can i find it.
I believe you are referring to this document:
https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/CONF53/Advanced+PDF+Export+Customisations
...which states that its stored in the temp directory in Confluence's home directory.
Keep in mind the document pertains to Confluence standalone, not Confluence OnDemand. If you have Confluence OnDemand you won't have direct access to the Confluence home directory without assistance from an OnDemand support engineer.
Hope this helps!
