Is it possible to add a status (not the Confluence status macro) directly to layout templates in the Confluence Cloud version, so that it is either dynamically tracked or visible in all pages created from the template?
If not, are there any workarounds or recommended apps to manage page status or approval workflows in templates? Or is it planned.
Would be good for simple Automatisation.
Hi @Laura Nussbaumer ,
Sadly, Confluence Cloud templates can't natively hold a dynamic status. Content is static once the page is created. A common workaround is to insert Handy Status into your templates and combine it with the Page Properties / Page Properties Report macros. That way, every page created from the template has an editable status in view mode, and all statuses can be rolled up into a live overview table for tracking.
It's a simple way to add lightweight automation without going full workflow (though Handy Status can also integrate with Comala if you need approvals).
Would you like to share how you're planning to use page statuses? Our team can suggest the best setup for your case or walk you through it in a quick call: https://calendly.com/smart-handy-team/30min?month=2025-09

Hi @Laura Nussbaumer ,
Just to clarify, you'd like to put the content status if someone uses the page template automatically?
As far as I know, this is not natively supported, but you could maybe use automation for it. For example, within a template you can add label which, when the page is published, can be a 'trigger' for automation which will change the page status.
For example:
Automation could be triggered by an event such as 'page published' and then have a condition to check if a specific label is added to the page. Within automation, you can use change page status action to 'automatically set it'.
As for 'reporting', Confluence Databases should support displaying content statuses, so you could have one dashboard-like database for all created pages 👀 (would probably need a bit more playing around to test this properly)
As for approvals... well, you could use automation just to notify 'approvers' when the page is published (or something like that), but without Marketplace apps you probably won't get some decent solution. :/
Here are somewhat related feature requests, so you might want to take a look at those (could give you some ideas for the solution you're looking for):
Cheers,
Tobi
