Is there a conflict between Confluence and the Lastpass Chrome extension

Jess Gibson December 29, 2016

If you have the Lastpass Chrome extension installed, we are seeing issues saving Confluence pages that have a '%' in the text.

Mac. Chrome Version 55.0.2883.95 (64-bit).

Issue is when I try to save after adding a "%" character, I get a red warning dialog that says

'Unable to communicate with server. Saving is not possible at the moment."

I eventually get a blue dialog that says

"Successfully reconnected
We're back in business. You're free to save your page again."

but when I try to save, I get the error again.

The response from Atlassian is really disappointing on this topic. With all other sites ratcheting down security and asking users to be more guarded with their passwords, Atlassian seems to be going the other way and doesn't seem to be doing anything about this.  For users that spend their life in Chrome and rely heavily on Atlassian products this is a major inconveniece. LastPass is one of the top password managers. Its especially troubeling knowing how flush with cash Atlassian is -- it says a lot about what the founders and Atlassian think of the customer's security.

I am having a similar problem editing Confluence pages in Chrome where I have the 1Password extension. I work around the problem by editing in incognito mode, which disables the extension.

We also might find a Chrome issue of some kind?  I've experienced:

  • Chrome + GoogleInbox + LastPass /= InboxSend
  • Safari + GoogleInbox + LastPass = InboxSend
  • Chrome + GoogleInbox - LastPass = InboxSend
  • Chrome + Confluence + LastPass /= ConfluencePageClose
  • Safari + Confluence + LastPass = ConfluencePageClose
  • Chrome + Confluence - LastPass = ConfluencePageClose

Others have also reported LastPass Chrome extension breaking SendWithUs

As far as who will pick up the task of trying to fix and when, I'll guess LastPass's paint dries faster than Atlassian or Google's smile

Given the problem reports here, plus some non-problem reports, I'm suspecting it's Confluence + Lastpass + something-else.

In my case, I've got a small pile of add-ons for Firefox, including a couple of security related ones that block some stuff.  So it might be that mine is working because I've not got another add-on that someone else has that breaks it, or even that Lastpass + Confluence breaks, but I'm blocking the code snippet that causes the problem.

Definitely something for Atlassian support to pick up to replicate and fix I think.  (Ok, the "fix" might be "a bug in Lastpass, Firefox or another add-on", but I'd start with Confluence)

This also occurs on pages sometimes without the percent character in them too.

I am frequently (40% of the time?) unable to save pages unless I remember to disable my LastPass extension before editing.

As I write this, I have just lost about an hour of page editing due to forgetting; even though I have concurrent editing turned on and it should be saving regularly in the background.

I experience this on Confluence Cloud in Chrome, both release and Beta, and on both Windows 10 and Mac Sierra.

Issue is also mentioned by a couple of people on LastPass forums.  LastPass extention is also discussed on Google Inbox forums (mail cannot be sent unless LastPass extension is disabled).

But to Robert and Nic's point, it is possible that there are complex interactions and we are confusing causation and coincidence, but it's quite repeatable for me in both the case of Inbox and Confluence, and on both PC and Mac.

I really don't know where the problem lies, but Confluence, Inbox and Lastpass are probably 90% of my web-connected day, so it's a big pain.

am seeing this issue - disabling LastPass resolved it.

This is discussed at length here: Getting error:"Unable to communicate with server. Saving is not possible at the moment."in

I'm with Nic. I use Chrome + LastPass with Confluence all of the time and have experienced no issues. What error are you receiving in the browser console?

I'm using Chrome against a Confluence Cloud install, with Lasptass installed and active, and not having a problem.

Could you

  1. Tell us more about Chrome - version and OS (I'm on Linux, most will be on Mac or <shudder>  Windows, which may be why I don't see it)
  2. Explain what the "issues" are?  Are the symptoms repeatable?
