Hi there!

My company is running Confluence (7.13.7) and Jira (8.20.8) on a Windows server 2012.

We want to install Microsoft Defender Endpoint (MDE) antivirus.  However, we don't know if there will be incompatibility issues or other problems that might arise.  The only informations that I've found so far is in the following link:

https://confluence.atlassian.com/confkb/using-antivirus-software-with-confluence-952060870.htm

Does someone as successfully installed and run MDE antivirus on a Confluence/Jira server?

Is there any exceptions or rules for that we should considered to run correctly this antivirus

(other than what is described in the link)?

Thank you!

Metheavy

HI @Metheavy Tan

Welcome to the community.

Atlassian recommends not to have a virus scanner on products, this as the volatility on file edits is large and virus scanners will act on this.

This will cause performance issues within the product.

As @Charlie Misonne describes, atlassian's policy might be a bit wide, but it's simply not wise to have a virus scanner active on the products directories.

Hi @Metheavy Tan

I ran into issues with multiple antiviruses in the past. I don't remember anything about MDE.

Personally I think the recommendation from Atlassian that you found on that page is too broad. They recommend to exclude the following 3 items which is basically everything related to your Confluence instance.

  • Confluence installation directory

  • Confluence home directory, in particular the index directory

  • Any database-related directories

If you exclude the entire Confluence home directory you also exclude the attachment directory. Users are be able to upload attachments and those would never be scanned.
Then what's the point in having an AV...
I would not exclude the attachment directory. But anything related to indexes and caches I would exclude.
