Looking at https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/confluence-storage-format-790796544.html#ConfluenceStorageFormat-Links, I see the specification for providing an internal link with an images as a basis. I'm looking to create an external link around an emoticon, which is currently rendered with an `ac:emoticon` directive. Simply wrapping the emoticon with the specified "<a>" tag neuters the link.
Is there a way to accomplish this? I'd settle for an image wrap for an external link as a workaround.
Asking here as to avoid shots in the dark since the documentation doesn't specify that this isn't supported.
@Andrew Grossman I note that the documentation you are referring to is for Confluence Server and your tags on your post indicate you are using Cloud, so perhaps this does not work in Cloud.
I do know that, in Cloud, you can specify a link on an image, but this does not appear to apply to emojis—when I select the emoji in edit mode, the image controls do not show.
I did not see corresponding documentation for Cloud and this seemed to match.
As I mentioned, yes, this does not function for emojis and the documentation implies images are possible. However, the documentation does not state what the incantation looks like for external links. That is part of my original inquiry.

@Andrew Grossman Start with this page for how links work on Cloud: https://support.atlassian.com/confluence-cloud/docs/insert-links-and-anchors/#Insert-links

@Barbara Szczesniak Apologies, as I neglected to specify that I am creating a page using the API. That is why I was referencing storage format documentation.
I do not see anything pertaining to my case on the page you suggested nor on the original page that I linked.
