Tables and Spell Checking

Two questions:

1. Can you tell me how to change the column width for tables?

2. Is there a spell-checker available while editing pages?

Tables are sized to fit contents. You might look to an add-in such as Table Plus to enable further features, but the general approach has been to allow the browser to make the decision on how to best display based on user's situation.

Spell checking is usually left to the browser. See https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Add+Spell+Checking+To+Confluence if you use IE, but others have it built-in.
