Upgrading Confluence

I tried to upgrade to Confluence 7.3.1 from my previous version. The upgrade failed miserably and now I am not able to restore the previous version because I cannot get to the configuration section.

 

I have tried to re-install the previous version but it will not connect to the original database. I created a temp database just so I could get to the original version and try to restore. The backup runs for about 10 seconds and then breaks Confluence.

I am at a 100% loss and would like to get this up as fast as possible.
