What is the best way to display staff availability / location?

We are a team of permanent and volunteer staff, full time and part time, situated in multiple locations.

We would like a way to know/see on a daily basis whether someone is in the office or somewhere else or on leave.

If you want real-time view on who is available on certain days Instant Messanger software works best. 

Atlassian's HipChat integrates well with other Atlassian products and provides this functionality:

@Jakub Pierzchała isn't it too unwieldy when you have 20+ people in or out of the office on different days?  or is there a way to determine in real time who is available on a certain day?
