There is limited vertical space, and the new navigation takes more of the space than it is worth.  The vertical navigation could be pushed off the screen, so it was out of the way when not needed.  The new navigation is always in the way, and cannot be hidden for the 99.9% of the time it is not needed.

How do we re-enable the less intrusive navigation?

Hello @Fred Rush ! As I understand, you want to revert to the previous navigation for our Cloud Platform. It was possible to revert to the previous navigation for some time, but your Confluence Site has likely reached the timeframe for the conversion to the new style.

According to posts about the release of the New Navigation, the complete rollout will be finished by the end of June and will not be possible to opt-out of that.

It clarifies that atlassian doesn't value customers.  We have to put up with the "updates" whether they improve or make the UI worse.

I also encourage you to leave your feedback about the new navigation there. All feedback is welcome.

During tests, the new navigation was positively reviewed by 95% of the feedback group. The group was recruited back in November 2019 to use a Google Chrome Plugin that simulated the new navigation without actually updating their site:

I hope this clarifies the reason behind this design change.
