Task managment via REST API

I'm trying to update a task via the REST API to my cloud instance but can't seem to get anything but a 500 return code. Is this supported? Do I need to supply the entire JSON descriptor that is returned from the /task get method (this does not seem to work for me)?  If you had an example I would greatly appreciate it. I also can't seem to view completed tasks through the api. Is this possible?

do you have a fully functioning script that can read and write tasks and change the status?
