Using Confluence guest groups

I have a hard time understanding what Confluence guest groups are for. I understand normal Confluence groups, but am I right to think that Confluence guest groups are only a different (and not shorter) way of adding multiple guest users to a space? 

I really mean add, not give access to: instead of adding guests to a space one by one, you can add them to a guest group, and then under the space's settings, you can add all users from that group to the space at once. However, adding new users to that guest group won't give them access to the same space; you'll need to add them one by one.

Is this really how it works? If yes, why would I use a guest group instead of adding those guests to a space directly?

Got an answer from Atlassian support. Guest groups can't be added to spaces, see https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFCLOUD-74916.

Quoting Atlassian support:

Other than that Guest groups can also be used for:

• Page Restrictions
• Tagging
• Organizing sets of guest users
• Identification of guest users on an instance
• Also, the Guest Role must have a default Guest group to work properly

If I understand correctly, adding guests to the guest group makes it easier to identify all of them in a Confluence instance.

That would make sense, but you can already do that in multiple ways:

• All guest users can be listed in the Users list.
• Guests of a given space can be listed under its Space permissions page.
• A list of all guests and their corresponding permissions can be listed on the Global Permissions page.

So, I don't think having groups for this too adds any value if they don't operate as normal groups (with their point being that you don't have to manage individual users' permissions for a group of people).
