Anyone lost permissions as admin?

fotis_karakostas February 19, 2025

Hello everyone,

We run product discovery on a free plan, and I have admin rights (and am in the admin group) for the product. Since January, I have been unable to change the access level of the JPD members, and I am unable to create or edit any access permissions. Even when I try to invite people, the only option is to invite them as admins.

Until December, I was able to define the access level of the members of this group. We are about 20 contributors (no license - free access), one Admin (myself), and (hopefully) one creator. Ideally, I would like to have a custom group to define the permissions of the other licensed user.

I would like to mention that no changes have been applied to my user on a Jira instance level.

I attach some screenshots of my current viewUntitled.png

Any thoughts?

It's because Atlassian aligned the JPD free plan with the rest of Jira.

https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-Product-Discovery-articles/JPD-Free-plan-Project-access-level-changes/ba-p/2840795

This documentation outlines this at the top:

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-product-discovery/docs/manage-your-team-project-access/

"When you are on a Free plan; everyone can open the project. Any user with creator product access is a creator and an admin on the project, and any user with contributor product access can act as a contributor to the project,"

Hi @Gary Spross ,

Thanks for the information, I wasn't aware of this alignment.

Does that mean that the 'Creator' role (access level) has been completely removed, and now JPD only has Admins (licensed users) and Contributors (non-licensed users)?

Thanks!

Sorry for the delayed response.

The "Creator" role still exists within the projects. It's just that with the free plan any JPD licensed user is automatically going to be in the "Creator" role within all JPD projects. So technically, on the free plan, you don't need to set roles within the projects other than "Administrator".

Hi Gary ,thanks for your input.

Seems that I can only invite new people as administrators not creators. I guess they become contributors if they are non licensed users. However if they have JPD license, how can I set them as creators?

Do you have any idea how to change this setting?

Thanks!

You can't change this on the free plan. You would need to upgrade to the Standard plan in order to be able to change access and roles within the projects.

"If your site is on the Free plan, as of November 15th, 2024, everyone with creator product access will be a project admin. It will not be possible to change the access permission scheme."
