Automating Customer Access Management in Jira Service Management

We manage a restricted Jira Service Management project and expect to grant customer-level access to an increasing number of external users. I've identified the 'Create a customer' method in the REST API, but I'm looking for implementation strategies, best practices, and lessons learned from those who have automated customer management in Jira.
