Good morning,

I have cell phone inventory with a contract end date attribute. I would like to have a report or a widget in my dashboard to indicate the cell phones ready for an upgrade.

did you implement the inventory with Assets? 
If so, we had a similar use case with one of our customers. We implemented an automation rule, with a scheduled trigger, that would search for objects with contract end date approaching and create an issue in the corresponding support project.

Dashboards are used to visualize issue data, so this would only be working, if your inventory would be based on a project with issues.
