Yes you will need to download the script runner add-on and add to the create transition the mentioned post function.

I'm trying the JIRA Automation Plugin way, it has the option to do it on issue create but doesnt seem to work.

But i guess edit a custom field at the same time as it is created is difficult...

It can be done, if it is not working for you move the post function to the bottom of the list of functions on the edit transition page.
