Need a backup solution for various Atlassian products

Mike Lehmann

I've been tasked with creating a backup solution for Jira Service managment, Confluence and BitBucket cloud.  I have very little experience with any of these things, yet here we are.

I've skimmed a few Google searches and it seems like we will need one or more 3rd party apps for this.  At this stage, I'm just looking for recommendations on where to start. I'm looking preferably for a single app that can do it all rather than multiple single focused ones, and ideally, somethig that's relatively easy to use that a Window sysadmin can underatand.

NB I've tried the Jira cloud manual backup/download but that's just not practicle, the data is hunderds of GB's

TIA

Hi @Mike Lehmann

As of today we only support Jira (All in one app i.e. JSW, JSM, Assets, JWM).

We do plan to bring in support for Confluence and BBC later this year based on the new backup & restore focussed API's that Atlassian will be publishing.

Here are the options  I see you have based on what I have seen in the marketplace:

1. You will not find an app in the marketplace that will cover all applications i.e. Jira Confluence, BitBucket etc.. you would have to get separate apps for each, unfortunately thats how it is going to be in the foreseeable future because of user licensing works in the marketplace.

2. Here are the choices you have for Jira Backup: Revyz, Rewind, GitProtect, ProBackup & TwinIt from a vendor perspective.

From a coverage perspective you also want to think about Jira Assets if that is important for you. Not everyone supports Jira Assets, Only Revyz & TwinIT have support for Jira Assets.

3. Here are the choices for Confluence Backup: Rewind, ProBackup

4. Here are the choices for Bitbucket Backup: GitProtect, Rewind

The factors I would consider for evaluation are:

- Use Cases addressed

- Enterprise readiness

- Security & Compliance

- Cost

Depending on what you want to optimize for, you may end up with different choices.  As an example if you are looking for a single vendor for all three apps, and are ok with what they offer then probably Rewind is a good choice for you assuming JSM Assets is not important.

Happy to walk you through more if you are interested.

Thanks for this great summary, Vish!

I just want to clarify that Rewind covers all platforms: Jira/JSM, Confluence, and Bitbucket on a single platform.

Our products are installed separately but shown in one app.

Thanks Vish.

Could you pls briefly elaborate on "Jira Assets" and what this means in practical terms?. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I am not a real 'admin' of Atlassian and have a limited undertanding of the products. Nor do I have a clear mission statement here other than "Backup Atlassian"

I might make use of your product demo offer

Hi Bob

No worries, here are a couple links on JSM Assets. It is a very powerful capability that Atlassian has bundled along with JSM.

In summary JSM Assets is a CMDB which you can link into your Service Management processes providing valuable context while addressing various types of service requests.

https://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/service-management/features/asset-and-configuration-management

https://www.revyz.io/blog/what-is-jsm-assets

https://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/service-management/resources/insight-data-center-get-started-guide#step-1

While the article talks about setting up Insights in a Data Center setup, the concepts are similar for the Cloud version too. Also note Atlassian rebranded "Insights" to "Assets" recently.

Please feel free to pick a time on my calendar that works best for you, happy to walk you through JSM assets and do a demo.

Thank you

Vish

Hi Bob!

If you want to go with a single app that covers it all, I'd recommend Rewind. We backup Jira, Confluence and Bitbucket. GitHub as well if you're using it.

Jira Service Management and Jira Work Management are included in Jira backups.

The Atlassian team recommends us as their third-party backups for Confluence.

You can book a demo with us here!

@Mike Lehmann -

Atlassian does back-up of your cloud products already automatically.  Please take a look at this reference page - https://www.atlassian.com/trust/security/data-management

Hope this also helps.

Hi @Joseph Chung Yin

Yes, you are correct Atlassian does backup data for all cloud products and have a very robust disaster recovery program in place.
The key to note is that the data backups that Atlassian makes is across their overall cloud infra and it is to address any disasters on the Atlassian side be it big or small. If the data deletion event is on the customer side, then the Atlassian backups will not help.

Please reference this page, where this is clearly called outhttps://www.atlassian.com/trust/security/security-practices#physical-security

"We operate a comprehensive backup program at Atlassian. This includes our internal systems, where our backup measures are designed in line with system recovery requirements. With respect to our Atlassian Cloud offerings, and specifically referring to customer and application data, we also have extensive backup measures in place. Atlassian uses the snapshot feature of Amazon RDS (Relational database service) to create automated daily backups of each RDS instance.

Amazon RDS snapshots are retained for 30 days with support for point-in time recovery and are encrypted using AES-256 encryption. Backup data is not stored offsite but is replicated to multiple data centers within a particular AWS region. We also perform quarterly testing of our backups.

For Bitbucket, data is replicated to a different AWS region, and independent backups are taken daily within each region.

We do not use these backups to revert customer-initiated destructive changes, such as fields overwritten using scripts, or deleted issues, projects, or sites. To avoid data loss, we recommend making regular backups.

The first part talks about the Atlassian Cloud infra processes and the last para makes a recommendation to customers.

This is inline with the Cloud Security Shared Responsibilities that Atlassian has published - https://www.atlassian.com/whitepapers/cloud-security-shared-responsibilities

Every large SaaS vendor be it Microsoft, Salesforce etc.. have similar policies, there is nothing unique or different that Atlassian is doing.

As in the case of Microsoft or Salesforce just like Atlassian there is a robust ecosystem of third party vendors who help customers with data protection.

@Vish Reddy {Revyz} -

I already know what you are referring and thanks for your info/time.  I was just bring the requester with additional information.

Thanks Joseph,
The issue is that the Atlassian backups are only kept for 30 days and are not really useful for any kind of granular restore.  It's not practical to manually download hundred's of GB from the Jira backup, I tried and can't even download a file that size.

Many companies have audit requirements to retain backup data much longer than 30 days also

Thanks to those that responded, I'll close this question and take a look at the products mentioned.  If i have more specific questions on the products I'll contact the vendors or post another more specific question

Hi @Mike Lehmann

I understand you pain point and thats the reason why we built the Revyz Data Manager for Jira Cloud

As of today we support Jira cloud, which includes Jira Software (JSW), Jira Service Management (JSM), Jira Work Management (JWM) & JSM Assets all in one app. In addition to backup & recovery we address a couple of additional use cases, hence the name Data Manager for Jira Cloud

We do have other Atlassian products on our roadmap.

I would love to do a demo for you if you are interested. Please feel free to block time on my calendar based on your availability.

Thank you

Hello,

If you need to backup Assets object schemas, restore, or migrate you can try the add-on or you can read the article below:

https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-Software-questions/Assets-Insight-Integration-into-the-Jira-Cloud-side-backup/qaq-p/2231444#M273665

You can try the app and if you have any questions and/or suggestions, please let us know via this thread or we can schedule a demo for the application.

Best Regards,

Hi @Mike Lehmann

@Vish Reddy {Revyz} , thank you for the very extensive summary and for mentioning GitProtect. @Mike Lehmann , I believe we can help you with your problem.

Our goal is to become a backup one-stop-shop for Atlassian and for now we have an automated backup solution for Jira (Jira Service Management, Jira Software, Jira Work Management), and Bitbucket. Confluence is on the way.

Moreover, it is easy to schedule and monitor backup performance within one management and monitoring center that covers the backup of all apps in one place. And you don't even need to log in regularly - you stay updated with fully customize email and Slack notifications, and audit logs or SLA reports. Learn more on the Atlassian marketplace: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1228719/gitprotect-io-backups-for-jira-cloud?hosting=cloud&tab=overview

Did I mention we have a free account for up to 10 users? Go ahead and test it out or contact us if you need a live demo or want to discuss your use case in more detail: https://calendly.com/bjurga/30min
