using jira service management, in datacenter version 5.12.8, is there any way to tell if a comment has been written shared with the customer or is internal? Because it seems to me that this functionality was there until not so long ago in JSM and now I cannot find it.

To identify the comment whether it is internal in a ticket you should be able to see a label "Internal"in the top right corner of the comment and if the label isn't present then the comment is shared with customer.
