Adding a template only to new issues without harming the existing ones

amit_m March 8, 2022

Hi all,

I want to add a template to my new stories and epics without purchasing a new app.

After searching google and Jira forums, I found that the best way is to create a custom field, set the default values.

I want to add the new field, called "Story's description" and remove the existing default description field so when I'll create a new card I'll have this field and template.

My concern is that the change will affect all the existing issues. It means that if I'll open an "old" story or epic I won't have the default description since I removed it.

Is there an option to set this change only on "New" tickets or do you have any other suggestion?

Thanks,

Amit

I could be wrong, but I don't think you want to remove the default description field on the ticket.

Default values for a field are input as a default during creation (unless there is something here you're not explaining) and then the value is stored as part of the row data for that ticket. So in a sense, the "default" is written to the ticket, never to be changed by a default field value again. Hence, any ticket opened in the past will retain whatever value was written when the ticket was created. If you want to create a new default value for all new tickets, simply update the default value at a planned time and then all those tickets will have the new default value.

However, this is all predicated on the idea that the default field value is set in Jira and not an add-on. If we're talking about an add-on this may not be accurate and you should outline that information including which add-on you are using.
