Can I make a custom field conditionally read only?

Mirza, Agha Zeeshan (HCL) June 5, 2024

Can I make a custom field conditionally read only? for example, If there is one directional value from jira Align to jira so when a user will create or view an issue (epic) in jira, the system will check if that project is associated with jira Align (JA) then the field will show up in read only mode and if that project is not associated with JA then that field behave normally like user can add or edit that field?

Hi,

If the list of projects being synced with JA is relatively stable, it's easiest to have a separate Issue type screen scheme for JA synced projects which has this field on its Edit event.

If the list changes a lot, you're up for a challenge...

Whether or not a field can be edited, is determined by the issue type screen scheme. If the field is on the screen that is assigned to the Edit event for the issue type, it will be editable.

You cannot adjust an issue type screen scheme dynamically.

Maybe you can remove it from any Edit screen, and make it editable on a workflow transition screen. Because you can make transitions conditional. The number of and type of workflow conditions depends on the Apps you have installed.

But you still have the challenge of figuring out if a project is synced with JA.

Have a nice day, Rik

This can be possible but for this, you have to create different statuses, like if the project is in Jira Align set the status to Jira Align or something else same as if it is not from jira align, you can manage edit permissions via workflow properties on same issue but on different statuses.
