Can I use Jira project in BitBucket

I have both Jira Cloud and BitBucket Cloud. Whenever I want to create a new repository in BitBucket I have to create a project in BitBucket as well which seems counter intuitive as I run all my project management from Jira.

Is it possible to create a repository in BitBucket and link it to a project already defined in Jira without also creating one in BitBucket?

I keep having the fear of creating a duplicate project key and messing things up.
