Can you add a task to a story?

There seems to be several attempted answers in the forum about this but nothing works and I can't find anything specific that answers the question.

Do projects not go with these levels?

Epic > Story > Task > Sub-Tasks

Story and Task are the same things?  There seems to be a lot of confusion here in the forums and youtube videos.  I know you can use it anyway you want, I'm just trying to get some clarification on what the intended purpose was on Story vs Task.

Thank you!

Hi Matthew - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

You can link a Story to a Task using the linked issues function, but that's usually not desirable as they are "linked" more or less if they are both connected to an Epic.

Inherently, Tasks are not children of Stories. They are non-story work that is done at the same level as stories.

Hey Jack and John! Thank you for the answers, yeah that's really confusing to people new to Jira but I think I'm getting it.

Thanks!
