Changing assignee in create transition

I have a custom workflow and when it is created for a certain project it should be assigned to a specific project.

I tried to create a post function on the create transition of updating the assignee field with the user but for some reason when create it just leaves the assignee as unassigned.

I have used this post function on all of the other transitions, is there a way to get this to work?

Also, I have just discovered on email notifications it is sending emails to the person who should be the assignee and in the notification it says they are the assignee but when you click through the issue is unassigned?
