Epics, Parents and Advanced Roadmaps

I created a new issue type for a certain Jira project project.  I need it to be above Epic in the hierarchy.  (We already have Initiative), and the project manager wanted to name the new issue type.)  They want to see the epics roll up under this new issue type.

After creating the new issue type (and all that that entails), I went to Advanced Roadmaps and added the new Issue Type to the hierarchy, placing it in the top position.  IThen, I added Parent Link to the Epic screen.

I created a test issue, using the new issue type.  DEV-37864

Then I created an epic (DEV-37865).  In the "parent link" field, I was unable to pull up my new issue type (Dev-37864).  However, many other issues (initiatives, etc.) dropped down for my selection, (but not my new DEV-37864.

Can you help me?

Just to be sure, you mention you already have Initiatives, so I assume those are currently the level immediately above Epics? So your current/new hierarchy would look like this:

  • 3. <your-new-issue-type>
  • 2. Initiative
  • 1. Epic
  • (Story)
  • (SubTask)

Or am I not reading it correctly?

If true, you'll need to link your Epic to an Initiative before linking further up. You can't "skip" levels in Advanced Roadmaps, similar to how you can't link a Subtask directly to an Epic.

Hope that helps ☺️
