How are queries formatted? How should an admin define order of the priority. How can I filter board?

Jared DiScipio August 12, 2019 edited

My board admin has asked me to do some research into ordering the boards we use by priority. How can this be accomplished? Many on this site have stated that I need to create some sort of filter. I was hoping that someone on here could give me a more verbose explanation of how filters work... as well as how I can work with my admin to order our backlog and board by priority (DESC)

Hello Jared,

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

I understand that you would like to filter the issues per priority in your boards, so your issues will be displayed from the highest to the lower priority (top to bottom) in your board list. Have I understood it correctly?

In order to clarify and give you the correct steps to achieve this goal, I would like to let you know that every single board in JIRA is configured by a Filter where you can change what issues you want to display and which order you want it to be displayed. These would be the specific steps to configure it:

- Navigate to your board > Click on the three dots at the top-right corner of the board > Board Settings

- In the General tab, click to Edit Filter Query - You will be redirected to edit your board filter

- At the end of the board filter (Advanced mode), add the following parameter:

order by priority desc

Let me know if this information helps.

Thank you for getting back so quickly. Yes this information is very useful, there is one issue though... When my board admin presses those three dots they do not see Board Settings. We are on a next-gen project, I am not sure if that matters.

Hello Jared,

Thank you for your answer.

Indeed, Next-gen projects were designed for those users who felt overwhelmed by the complexity of JIRA Classic template and requested a simpler option, straight to the point with fewer options of customization.

That being said, it does not have the option to customize Board filters, Although we have a feature request opened to implement it:

Ability to configure board filters for Next-Gen project

Feel free to vote and watch the suggestion to increase its priority and also receive notifications about any updates.

For now, if you would like to sort issues in your board, I would recommend you to use a Classic board. Optionally, you can move your issues between next-gen and Classic projects by following the steps in this documentation:

Migrate between next-gen and classic projects

Let me know if you still have any questions.
