How do I view initiatives in a timeline view?

I was hoping to be able to see the initiative level in my timeline view, and to be able to switch between initiatives for viewing. I can't seem to figure out how to do it... I only see issues rolling up to epics but no higher.

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

Are you accessing a Timeline option that appears in the left-side navigation pane when you are viewing a backlog?

Or are you opening a Plan from the Plans menu and viewing the the Timeline available there?

The former (Timeline from viewing a board/backlog) is only basic functionality, and can only show the hierarchy from Epics down.

If you need to see the extended issue hierarchy that has been built above Epics then you need to create a Plan and view the Timeline therein (the latter).

If you are already viewing the Plan Timeline then perhaps you have it based on source material that does not include the Initiatives, or you have set Filters on it that result in the Initiatives being excluded.

Wow, what a great answer, thanks so much. It is a bit confusing, I knew we had the ability to create initiatives, I have even done it before... but that timeline link is so seductive and looks like a good portal to creating higher level timelines. Perhaps in the future they will make it so!
